Morocco’s RS Berkane win CAF Super Cup

RS Berkane defeated Wydad Casablanca 2-0 on Saturday evening to lift their maiden CAF Super Cup.

RS Berkane continued from where they stopped in July when they defeat Wydad for the Moroccan Throne Cup and it was a memorable start to the 2022-23 season for new Algerian manager Abdelhak Benchikha who succeeded DR Congo’s Florent Ibenge.

The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat played host to the Moroccan teams who won the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup last season.

Confederation Cup winners, RS Berkane showed their resilience in the encounter and they emerged victorious with a goal in each half of the encounter.

Cherki El Bahri opened the scoring in the 32nd minute then Sofiane El Moudane doubled the lead in the 71st minute from the penalty spot.

At the end, RS Berkane goalkeeper Hamza Hamiani Akbi was awarded the Man of the Match prize for his commanding presence between the sticks which led to a clean sheet despite Wydad’s 19 attempted shots.

RS Berkane will turn their attention to the Moroccan top division as they chase their first league win of the season against OC Safi on September 18.

Their first two matches ended in a draw and defeat. The Oranges will play in the CAF Confederation Cup this season while Wydad Casablanca have their spot secured in the Champions League.
