AFCON 2027 set to be be held in June-July slot

Man City agree deal to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has announced that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will take place from June 19 to July 18 next year, Afrosport reports.

There have been reports that tournament co-hosts, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda do not have the necessary infrastructure to host the competition leading to delays or being moved elsewhere but Motsepe debunked those claims.

The South African mining tycoon, speaking at a CAF Executive Meeting in Dar es Salaam on Friday, was confident in the three East African countries hosting a successful tournament.

“The AFCON next year in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda is going to be enormously successful,” he said.

“I am enormously confident. There are always challenges.

“We have to believe in ourselves as Africans and believe in our people. The quality of people we have who lead African football are world class.”

After the AFCON 2027, the tournament will move from a biennial schedule to a quadrennial schedule starting from 2028.

Meanwhile, Motsepe affirmed that Morocco will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled to start on March 17.

This comes after South Africa’s deputy sports minister, Peace Mabe said her country would host the tournament after Morocco pulled out.

South African sports minister Gayton McKenzie, however clarified that Morocco remained the officially designated host.
