Carlos Alcaraz defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in four sets (2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5) at the final of the Australian Open men’s singles on Sunday to complete a Career Slam, Afrosport reports.
Alcaraz reached his maiden final in Melbourne after getting past Alexander Zverev in a gruelling five sets (6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5) in the semi-finals while record 10-time champion Djokovic got past reigning champion Jannik Sinner, also in five sets (3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4).
Djokovic broke Alcaraz twice in the opening set to take it in 34 minutes. Alcaraz however did the exact thing in the second set in 37 minutes to level the match. The Spaniard did the same thing in third set but took him 52 minutes to achieve.
The fourth set was very intense with both players holding their serve until till 12th game when Alcaraz broke Djokovic to see out the match in three hours and five minutes.
Alcaraz became the ninth player to achieve a Career Slam in the history of men’s singles but the youngest to do so at 22 years.
His Australian Open title was the seventh major of his career after winning two titles each at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) for her first Australian Open title and second major of her career after her Wimbledon triumph in 2022.
