FA Cup: Martinelli scores first career hat-trick in Arsenal win at Portsmouth

Gabriel Martinelli scored the first hat-trick of his career as Arsenal defeated EFL Championship side Portsmouth 4-1 in the third round of the FA Cup at Fratton Park on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta made a raft of changes to the starting XI following Thursday’s goalless draw at home with Liverpool in the Premier League.

The North London outfit went behind after just three minutes when Colby Bishop scored for Pompey. That lead however did not last long as Arsenal levelled five minutes later thanks to an own goal by Andre Dozzell.

Arteta’s men were 2-1 up in the 25th minute after Noni Madueke set up Martinelli to finish off. Madueke had the chance to take his team 3-1 up in the 43rd minute from the penalty spot but missed.

The Premier League leaders were not going to be denied six minutes into the second half as the Brazilian connection between Gabriel Jesus and Martinelli allowed the latter to have a brace.

His hat-trick was completed in the 72nd minute as he was assisted by Madueke for the second time in the game.

Arsenal will remain in cup action as they take on fierce London rivals Chelsea in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.
