Mozambique took the lead against Gabon in the 37th minute through Faisal Bangal, off an assist from Geny Catamo. Sporting Lisbon forward Catamo doubled it from the penalty spot five minutes later.
Gabon talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back in added time of the first half, but Mozambique were 3-1 up in the 52nd minute thanks to Diogo Calila.
Alex Moucketou-Moussounda halved the deficit in the 76th minute, while Catamo thought he had a brace and put Mozambique 4-2 up, but his effort in added time was ruled out for offside by VAR.
