CAF increases AFCON prize money to record $10 million

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant increase in prize money for the Africa Cup of Nations, with the tournament winners now set to receive $10 million, Afrosport reports.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the increase during an executive committee meeting in Morocco, raising the champion’s reward from $7 million to $10 million, the highest in AFCON history.

CAF says the move is part of plans to improve the commercial value and global competitiveness of African football. Motsepe said the enhanced prize fund reflects growing sponsorship interest and CAF’s ambition to invest more heavily in national teams and football development across the continent.

The increased prize money will apply to future AFCON tournaments, beginning with the upcoming editions, and is expected to ease financial pressures on national football associations, many of which rely heavily on tournament earnings.

“This is about creating value for African football,” he said. “Our competitions must reward excellence and help grow the game at every level.”

Motsepe has consistently emphasised the need for African football to generate greater revenue and deliver stronger returns for its member associations.
