UCL: Rashford strikes twice as Barcelona edge Newcastle at St James’ Park

Marcus Rashford made a big statement on his return to England as he scored twice in FC Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday, Afrosport reports.

The Magpies were able to contain the Blaugrana in the first half at St. James Park but there was no stopping them when Rashford sent in a powerful header from a Jules Kounde cross in the 58th minute for his first goal since joining Barca on loan from Manchester United in the summer.

The 27-year-old England forward doubled the Catalan giants lead 11 minute later with a sublime shot from outside the box that found its way into the top corner of the net.

Hansi Flick’s men were in control of the game afterwards but things got nervy in the closing stages when Anthony Gordon pulled one back for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe’s men tried to find the equaliser with seven additional minutes but Barcelona held firm to take the three points.

In one of the other games played on Thursday, Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to defeat Turkish giants Galatasaray 5-1 at Deutsche Bank Park.

Yunus Akgun put Gala in front after eight minutes but Frankfurt found their way back with goals from Davison Sanchez (own goal), Can Yilmaz Uzun and Jonathan Burkardt for a 3-1 first lead before Burkardt made it a brace in the second half and Ansgar Knauff netted the final goal.
