Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the appointment of Kasper Hjulmand as head coach, a week after sacking Erik ten Hag, Afrosport reports.
Leverkusen parted ways with Ten Hag on 1 September after overseeing just two Bundesliga games. Meanwhile, Hjulmand has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at BayArena until 2027.
“I have always perceived Bayer 04 as a very well-run, well-structured, and highly ambitious club,” the former Denmark coach said. “This impression has been strengthened over the past few days.
“It is an honour to be entrusted with such a team. After outstanding successes in the past, I am very motivated by the task of shaping the future of Bayer 04 Leverkusen with both proven and exciting new players.”

Hjulmand led Denmark to the round of 16 at last year’s European Championship, losing to hosts Germany. He also guided them to semi-finals in 2021, where they narrowly lost to England after extra time.
Leverkusen managing director sport Simon Rolfes, said: “We are delighted to have brought in Kasper Hjulmand, whose work we have followed closely over a long period of time.
“His assistant coach with Denmark, Ismael Camenforte, also worked for us for several years. Kasper even recommended Ismael to us at the time. As a result, his training methods are well known to us at the club and Kasper also knows our club very well from the last few years.
“He will now work with our team to re-establish a clear and proactive style of play. Kasper is the right man to develop our new Werkself side into a top team that will strive to achieve the most ambitious national and international goals.”
Hjulmand is Leverkusen’s second managerial appointment since the departure of title-winner Xabi Alonso in June. The Spaniard, who departed for Real Madrid, guide Die Werkself to an unbeaten domestic debut in the 2023-24 season.
Leverkusen have picked up just one point from their opening two games and sit 12th in the Bundesliga standings, and the Dane is expected to be on the sidelines when they host Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday.
