Nigeria’s Boniface joins Werder Bremen on loan from Leverkusen

UCL: Boniface strike helps Leverkusen seal victory over AC Milan

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, Afrosport reports.

The move comes after his proposed switch to AC Milan collapsed, with the Italian club pulling out due to fitness concerns. Milan had initially agreed a loan deal worth €5 million, with a €25m option to buy.

Boniface arrived at Leverkusen in July 2023 from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise and quickly became a fan favourite at the BayArena, where he has registered 32 goals and 12 assists in 61 appearances for Die Werkself.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut season, playing a pivotal role in the club’s historic domestic treble — winning the Bundesliga for the first time, lifting the German Cup, and claiming the German Super Cup, all while remaining unbeaten domestically.

However, the Nigeria international is now the latest member of Leverkusen’s title-winning squad to depart this summer, following the exits of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong (Liverpool), Granit Xhaka (Sunderland), Jonathan Tah (Bayern Munich), Amine Adli (Bournemouth), and former manager Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid).

Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said: “We currently have three strikers for one position in Patrik Schick, Christian Kofane and Victor Boniface. Therefore, it was in both Victor’s and our interest to find a good solution here. At Werder, Boni will hopefully get the chance to make a fresh start at the highest level and prove his quality.”

Boniface becomes Bremen’s sixth summer signing, joining Samuel Mbangula, Maximilian Wober, Karl Hein, Yukinari Sugawara and Isaac Schmidt.

In his first message to supporters, Boniface expressed his excitement: “Hi Bremen fans, it’s Boniface Victor… I’m really looking forward to my time in Bremen. I can’t wait to see you all and play in front of you. See you soon, Caio.”
