West Ham United have agreed a deal with Southampton to sign Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes for more than £40 million, Afrosport reports.
The 21-year-old joined the Saints from Sporting Lisbon last summer for £15 million and has played 46 times for the south coast outfit, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.
According to BBC Sport, he will travel to have a medical in London and will become the Hammers’ third most-expensive signing after Lucas Paqueta (£51 million) and Sebastien Haller (£45 million).
Fernandes’ imminent arrival will hopefully improve West Ham’s fortunes on the pitch after their poor start to the season under manager Graham Potter.
The East London side lost their opening Premier League games against newly-promoted Sunderland and Chelsea, while they were knocked out by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup second round on Tuesday.
They are also closing in on signing 21-year-old French midfielder, Soungoutou Magassa, of Malian heritage, from AS Monaco for a reported £17.3 million and is also set to have a medical.
