Madagascar booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 African Nations Championship after defeating co-hosts Kenya 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in extra time in Friday’s quarter-final, Afrosport reports.
The Barea progressed to the last eight after finishing second in Group B behind co-hosts Tanzania, while the Harambee Stars finished top of Group A ahead of two-time champions Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Angola and Zambia.
After a goalless first half at the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi, Alphonce Omija broke the deadlock for the Kenyans three minutes into the second half.
It was however short-lived as Madagascar equalised 21 minutes later, thanks to Fenohasina Razafimaro converting from the penalty spot.
Nothing separated the two teams afterwards, and it went to a shootout, with Heriniaina Randrianirina missing the second spot kick for the Malagasy.

This gave Kenya the edge, which was again short-lived as Michael Kibwage and Alphonce Omija missed the fourth and fifth kicks, handing Madagascar the win and setting up a semi-final meeting with either Sudan or Algeria in Dar es Salaam.
