Mauritania got the better of 10-man Burkina Faso with a 1-0 win in their final 2024 African Nations Championship Group B game in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
After drawing with 10-man Madagascar in their opener and losing to co-hosts Tanzania, the Mauritanians got their first victory in the previous match against Central African Republic, winning 1-0.
Against the Burkinabe, a converted penalty kick from Alassane Diop deep in added time of the first half, was the difference at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium after Burkina Faso’s Abdoulaye Toure was shown a straight red card for violent conduct in the 41st minute.
Mauritania are currently second in Group B but will have to wait for the outcome of Madagascar’s final match against the Burkinabe.

The Malagasy have four points following their 2-0 win over Central African Republic in the other Group B on Wednesday, and could take second from Mauritania if they beat Burkina Faso and end up with a superior goal difference to the Mauritanians.
