Ashley Young set to join Ipswich on free transfer after failed Watford move

Veteran full-back Ashley Young is set to join Championship side Ipswich Town after a move to his former club Watford collapsed, Afrosport reports.

The 40-year-old has been a free agent since his two-year association with Everton ended at the expiration of his contract last month.

Young was close to joining Watford, but was not able to come to terms with the club. His career started at Vicarage Road in 2003, making 110 appearances before joining Aston Villa in 2007.

According to talkSPORT, the former Inter Milan player is now set to team up with head coach Kieran McKenna, who was a member of the backroom staff while he was at  Manchester United between 2011 and 2020.

Ipswich gained Premier League promotion for the first time in 22 years last summer but were unable to maintain their top-flight status, ending in 19th place, 16 points from safety and ultimately returning to the Championship.
