U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles defender Bameyi named in Team of the Tournament

U20 AFCON: Flying Eagles duo Bameyi, Okoro named in Group Stage Best XI

Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has been named in the official Best XI of the just-concluded under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Afrosport reports.

Bameyi, who was also named to the Group Stage Best XI, was the only Nigerian on the list announced by the Technical Study Group of the Confederation of African Football.

South Africa defeated Morocco on Sunday in Cairo to win the U20 AFCON tournament for the first time in history, and players from both teams were rewarded for their top-class performances in the competition.

The Amajitas and the Young Atlas Lions led the way with four players each, while Nigeria, Egypt and Sierra Leone had one apiece.

Fletcher Lowe, who was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament, and the Best Player of the Tournament, Tylon Smith, headline the list, alongside their teammates Lazola Maku and Neo Rapoo.

Lowe, who made the most saves during the competition, was integral to South Africa’s triumph over Morocco in the final, having assisted their only goal and kept four clean sheets in the competition.

Smith, meanwhile, was an ever-present figure in the Amajitas defence and was the scorer of their only goal in the semi-final against Nigeria’s Flying Eagles.

The Moroccan quartet of Othmane Maamma, Hossam Essadak, Hamza Koutoune and Faycal Zahouani was also named to the Team of the Tournament.

Golden Boot winner Sierra Leone’s Momoh Kamara, who scored four goals, also made the team, as did Egypt’s Mohamed Goweily and Bameyi.

Meanwhile, South Africa boss, Raymond Mdaka, was named the Coach of the Tournament after leading his side to a historic victory.
