La Liga: Yamal scores as Barcelona edge Atletico in thrilling comeback win to move top

Lamine Yamal was on target as Barcelona achieved a monumental 4-2 comeback win against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday and returned to the top of the La Liga standings, Afrosport reports.

A brace from Ferran Torres and one apiece from Robert Lewandowski and Yamal handed the Catalan giants a crucial victory in a six-goal thriller in Madrid.

Yamal came close to opening the scoring in the sixth minute, but his curling effort, which swept past Jan Oblak, failed to beat the post.

At the other end, Wojciech Szczesny denied Giuliano Simeone, while Robert Lewandowski failed to take his chance in the Atletico box.

Barcelona, however, were pegged back just before the halftime break as Julian Alvarez scored his 11th goal of the season, finishing from close range off a Simeone pass.

Atletico doubled their lead in the second half through Alexander Sorloth’s 70th-minute tap-in after fine play from Conor Gallagher on the left.

Lewandowski halved the deficit for the visitors in the 72nd minute, with the Polish forward finding the bottom corner after bringing down a long ball from Inigo Martinez.

The Catalans drew level through a deft header from Torres six minutes later, while Yamal completed their turnaround in the second minute of stoppage time as his left-footed strike hit Reinildo and wrongfooted Oblak.

Barcelona still had time for one more as Torres completed his brace, sliding the ball into the bottom corner after Raphinha nicked the ball off an Atletico defender.

The result capped a well-deserved win for Hansi Flick’s side, who returned to the La Liga summit with 60 points, level with Real Madrid, who have played one more game.
