Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal as Newcastle United defeated Liverpool in the EFL Cup final at Wembley on Sunday to lift their first major title in 56 years, Afrosport reports.
The Magpies were back in the EFL Cup final having finished runners-up to Manchester United in 2022-23, and started on the front foot when Dan Burn rose highest to power in a header before the half time break.
Isak thought he had doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 51st minute but it was ruled out as captain Bruno Guimaraes was offside.
The Swedish striker of Eritrean heritage was however not going to be denied as he responded immediately with a clinical finish off a Jacob Murphy assist, the eighth time he was assisted by the 30-year-old English man of Nigerian heritage in all competitions this season.

Eddie Howe’s side were in control of the tie until the 94th minute when substitute Federico Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool following a lengthy VAR check.
Arne Slot’s men tried to find the equaliser and force extra but Newcastle held their nerves to win their first major title since the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969 and their first domestic title since the FA Cup in 1955.
