Aliou Cisse: Libya appoints ex-Senegal boss as new head coach

Former Senegal international Aliou Cisse has been appointed as the new head coach of the Libyan national team, Afrosport reports.

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) on Tuesday, in a post on social media, announced the appointment of Cisse, who was sacked from his role as head coach of Senegal last October.

Having led Senegal’s Teranga Lions to triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the 48-year-old will oversee the Mediterranean Knights of Libya until 2027.

He replaces Nasser Al-Hadhiri, who was appointed in September 2024, and took charge of the team in their final three matches in the AFCON 2025 qualifying rounds.

The LFF, meanwhile, revealed that Cisse will be officially unveiled on 13 March in Tripoli before the start of his reign.

Libya missed out on qualifying for this year’s AFCON in Morocco after finishing bottom of their four-team group.

The Mediterranean Knights, however, sit second in Group D of the World Cup qualifiers with seven points from four games, one behind leaders Cameroon.

They are in action later this month, hosting Angola at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium on Thursday, 20 March, before facing Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in Yaounde five days later.
