Wolves’ Matheus Cunha charged by FA after Bournemouth red card

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha on Wednesday was charged by the Football Association (FA) following his red card against Bournemouth, Afrosport reports.

Cunha was sent off by referee Sam Barrott in the final minute of extra time at the Vitality Stadium as Bournemouth defeated Wolves 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in their FA Cup fifth-round clash on Saturday.

He was involved in an altercation with Bournemouth’s left-back Milos Kerkez, lashing out at the Hungarian as well as aiming a headbutt at him.

The Wolves No. 10 initially refused to leave the pitch after receiving his marching orders, but was eventually forced down the tunnel by team officials.

The FA, however, has charged the Brazilian for acting in an “improper manner”, with the former Atletico Madrid forward set to serve a three-match ban for the red card.

Meanwhile, Cunha, who scored Wolves’ only goal in the game, could see his sanction increased as a result of the charge, which he has until Monday, 10 March, to respond to.

The forward has previously received a two-game ban and an £80,000 fine this season after a post-match altercation with a member of Ipswich Town’s security staff in December.

The 25-year-old has 15 goals and four assists across 29 games in all competitions for Wolves this season, including 13 in the Premier League.

He will miss their next three games against Everton, Southampton, and West Ham, and could miss their crucial relegation clash against Ipswich Town if handed an extra ban.

Wolves are currently 17th in the league standings with 22 points, five points above 18th-placed Ipswich, who are at Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace on Saturday.
