Amorim acknowledges Garnacho improvement since Manchester Derby axe

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has acknowledged that Alejandro Garnacho has improved since he was axed from the team ahead of the Manchester derby in December, Afrosport reports.

The Argentine winger, along with Marcus Rashford, was dropped from the squad for the crunch game against rivals Manchester City, which the Red Devils won from behind 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Both Garnacho and Rashford were dropped for not giving enough in training and on the pitch, however the former has been eased back into the team and slowly adapting to Amorim’s methods even as he has been linked with a move to Napoli and Chelsea in the winter transfer window.

The former, meanwhile, remains sidelined from the first team, which Amorim has said his stance will not change.

“He changed right away since that game against Manchester City, the way he understands things, he understands that I just want to help him and I just want to win games,” the Portuguese said of Garnacho.

“He changed in everything – the approach when I talk to him, the way he recovers, he understands sometimes I’m a different coach and that I’m demanding in my way.

“Sometimes it’s hard with the first impact because it’s a different type of coach. He understands [now] that it’s never in a bad way – it’s always for him.

“I think all the merit is for Garnacho. He is improving and we want to continue to improve with Garnacho. On Thursday he understood the position, the moments of playing inside or outside, and the connection with Diogo Dalot is improving a lot.”

Garnacho has played 35 times in all competitions this season and has contributed eight goals and six assists, the highest of any player behind Bruno Fernandes (nine goals, 11 assists) and Amad Diallo (nine goals, seven assists).
