The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the appointment of Winfried Anton Schafer as the Black Stars Technical Advisor, Afrosport reports.
Schafer will also serve as the GFA Director of Football, where he will collaborate with the association’s Technical Directorate to implement long-term strategic plans, align technical guidance with Ghana’s football philosophy, and oversee youth development initiatives.
The 75-year-old German is not a stranger to African football, having previously coached Cameroon for three years, leading the Indomitable Lions to the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
Schafer also had stints with Thailand’s and Jamaica’s national teams, as well as European clubs like Borussia Monchengladbach, Karlsruher SC, and VfB Stuttgart.
His international experience extends to the Middle East, where he coached Al-Ain, Al-Ahli Dubai, and Al-Khor.
Meanwhile, the GFA also announced the appointment of Desmond Ofei as the new assistant coach of the Black Stars.
Ofei, who is currently the head coach of the national U-20 team, the Black Satellites, has been rewarded for his impressive achievements with the youth team.
He led the Black Satellites to victory at the African Games on home soil and the final of the WAFU Zone B U-20 tournament, where they secured a ticket to the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations despite losing 2-1 to Nigeria.
The 37-year-old will work closely with head coach Otto Addo and the newly appointed technical advisor, Schafer.
Kris Perquy has also been appointed as the Black Stars psychologist; Belgian Gregory De Grauwe is the new head of the Video Analysis Unit; and Issah Amadou (Asante Kotoko) and Abdul Rahman Alhassan (Hearts of Oak) join the team as equipment officers.
