Djokovic withdraws from Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against Denmark with injury

World No. 6 Novak Djokovic has pulled out of Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against Denmark due to a hamstring injury, Afrosport reports.

Djokovic, 37, was forced to retire during his Australian Open semi-final clash against Germany’s Alexander Zverev last week due to the injury and was booed off the court by fans in Melbourne.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion took to social media afterwards to post a picture of an MRI taken on his injured left hamstring. He wrote: “Thought I’d leave this here for all the sports injury ‘experts’ out there.”

Serbia, who will be without Djokovic, are due to play Denmark in a first-round qualifying tie, which will begin on Friday, 31 January.

“We are weakened by not playing Novak, but we are still going for the win,” Serbia captain Viktor Troicki.

“The Danes have a great player in Holger Rune, but our players are also great and I believe in my team.”

The Serbian entourage now comprises Miomir Kecmanovic, Hamad Mededovic, and Laslo Dere, as well as doubles specialists the Sabanov brothers, Matej and Ivan.

Serbia will also be without the services of Dusan Lajovic owing to an injury.
