Botswana on Thursday officially appointed South African Morena Ramoreboli as permanent head coach of their national team on a two-year contract, Afrosport reports.

Ramoreboli, as interim coach, helped Botswana secure historic qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals scheduled to be held in Morocco later this year.

His interim tenure saw him oversee crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt and Mauritania, helping the Zebras secure two vital draws to return to the continental showpiece for the first time since 2012.

The 42-year-old was formerly in charge of Jwaneng Galaxy, and he led them to two Botswana Premier League titles and qualified for the CAF Champions League twice.

“Today, we proudly introduce the new Head Coach of the Zebras, Mr. Morena Ramoreboli,” said Botswana FA President Oabile Tariq Babitseng at a press conference on Thursday. “Mr. Ramoreboli brings a wealth of experience and success. He holds a CAF A license and has spent over a decade proving his abilities as a top coach.

“With Jwaneng Galaxy, he won two Botswana Premier League titles and qualified for the CAF Champions League twice. His success in regional tournaments, including COSAFA, adds to his impressive profile.

“One of Mr. Ramoreboli’s greatest strengths is his connection to our players. He has worked closely with many of them at club level, and this familiarity will ensure a smooth transition. This makes him the right man to lead the Zebras forward.”

The Botswana Football Association (BFA), however, has set some ambitious targets for the South African, which include advancing beyond the AFCON group stages, amassing at least 12 points in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, qualifying for the 2026 African Nations Championship (CHAN), and winning the 2025 COSAFA Senior Men’s Challenge.

He has also been tasked with improving Botswana’s FIFA ranking to break into Africa’s top 30.

The Zebras currently sit third with six points in Group G of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, three points behind Algeria and Mozambique.

Ramoreboli will face his first test as Botswana’s permanent head coach against Algeria when the World Cup qualifiers resume in March.
