UEL: Amorim clarifies ‘worst’ Man United comment ahead of Rangers clash

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has clarified comments he made at the weekend when he described the current team as the “worst” in the history of the club, Afrosport reports.

The Portuguese tactician stated this after the Red Devils were beaten 3-1 by Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford, making it the sixth loss in the league since he took charge and fourth on home soil.

It raised questions about the depth of problems within the squad which has failed to consistently produce results since Sir Alex Ferguson retired almost 12 years ago.

Amorim however stated ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash at home with Rangers, that those comments were made out of frustration, and was referencing himself on how he has not yet succeeded in putting his methods across.

“First of all, I want to talk about that. I was talking more for myself than for my players because I was talking that – and you have to find out a coach that start a job and loses eight games, I think seven games in the first ten,” he said.

“So, it’s more for me, I was talking more about me than the players. I also talk in the same response about the (way) I was not helping my players. And if you look around every time I speak – and I speak a lot – every time you push about the players are not good enough, I never put the spot(light) on my players.

“So, I understand, I gave you that headline. I’m frustrated sometimes and sometimes I should not say in those terms, but it is what it is. And that’s it. Sometimes it’s really hard to hide the frustration in some moments.

“But the good thing is that I said the same things in a different way in the dressing room five minutes before. So, the response was quite normal because I’m really blunt with my players and they trained well. They are ready for this game and let’s see tomorrow.”

Man United are currently seventh in the Europa League standings and victory over Rangers will most likely guarantee their place automatically in the round of 16 with one fixture to go in the league phase.
