Serie A: Lookman goal not enough as Napoli beat Atalanta to extend lead

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman was on target at the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday as Atalanta fell 3-2 to Serie A leaders Napoli, Afrosport reports.

The 27-year-old scored in the second half, notching his 10th league goal as he hit double figures for the season.

Italian forward Mateo Retegui put Atalanta ahead in the 16th minute with a thunderous left-footed strike from inside the box for his league-leading 14th goal of the season.

Napoli, however, drew level through Matteo Politano, who rifled home a powerful left-footed effort into the roof of the net in the 27th minute.

The visitors completed the turnaround 13 minutes later through Scotland international Scott McTominay. After some fine work down the left from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, the Cameroonian found McTominay unmarked inside the box, and the former Manchester United midfielder converted from close range for his fifth goal in Serie A.

Napoli took the lead into the halftime break, but Lookman restored parity for Atalanta 10 minutes into the restart. After skipping past Giovanni Di Lorenzo, the Nigerian found the bottom corner with a left-footed low strike, which left goalkeeper Alex Meret rooted to a spot.

Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku got the all-important goal for the Partenopei in the 78th minute as his glancing header from an Anguissa cross beat goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi for his eighth league goal of the season.

Napoli held on for the victory as they clinched their eighth away win of the season, a feat they have achieved just twice previously.

Antonio Conte’s side remained atop the Serie A standings with 50 points after 21 matches, six clear of Inter Milan in second place and seven ahead of Atalanta, who occupy the third spot.
