Peru on Thursday announced the sacking of Jorge Fossati as head coach following a bad run of results in the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, Afrosport reports.
Fossati took over the Peru job in December 2023, replacing Juan Reynoso, who helped the team secure just two points from six matches in the World Cup qualifiers.
The 74-year-old has helped Los Incas garner five more points from another six games. However, they remain bottom of the table with seven points from 12 games, having registered just one win.
“Jorge Fossati will not continue his mission as coach of the Peruvian national team,” the Peru football federation said.
Six teams qualify automatically for the World Cup from the CONMEBOL, and Peru remains four spots behind, with Paraguay currently occupying the sixth spot with 17 points.
They are now in search of a new head coach with big matches coming up against Bolivia and Venezuela when the South American qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada resumes in March.
