Purcell takes voluntary suspension after breaching anti-doping regulations

Two-time Grand Slam winning doubles player Max Purcell has voluntarily suspended himself from competition after breaking tennis anti-doping rules, Afrosport reports.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency revealed it in a statement on Monday after Purcell was proved guilty of committing the offence.

The 26-year-old revealed via his Instagram page saying he “unknowingly” consumed an overdose of the IV infusion of vitamins which was not supposed to be above 100ml.

Furthermore, the Australian also claimed that he is always very wary of these things stating that he instructed the medical clinic on the limit he is prohibited to consume as he is an athlete but the medical records says otherwise.

“This news was devastating to me because I pride myself on being an athlete who always makes sure that everything is WADA safe,” Purcell wrote.

“I volunteered this information to the ITIA and have been as transparent as possible in trying to put this whole situation behind me.”

However, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) did not reveal the duration of the suspension although they stated that duration of the suspension will definitely influence the duration of any future sanction.

“During the provisional suspension, Purcell is prohibited from playing in, coaching at, or attending any tennis event authorized or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA, ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, Federation Francaise de Tennis, Wimbledon and USTA) or any national association,” the ITIA statement read.

In addition, five-time Grand Slam Champion Iga Swiatek also accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance few weeks back.

While on the other hand Jannik Sinner, who won two Grand Slams this year was exonerated by the ITIA for testing positive twice for anabolic steroids in a match.
