The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has agreed to increase the number of clubs participating in the league from the 2025-26 season, Afrosport reports.
The league body has concluded plans to increase the number of clubs from 16 to 20 teams.
The NWFL announced this new development in a communique released after their Annual General Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday.
The body stated that arrangements for the successful take-off of the league will be implemented in due time.
The NWFL also confirmed the results of the Premiership and Championship tables from the 2023-24 season, as well as the promotion of both Ibom Angels and Honey Badgers to the top division, while Royal Queens and Sunshine Queens’ relegation have been confirmed.
The league body, which started with 12 teams in 2017, agreed that the two-group format for the NWFL Premiership will be retained for the 2024-25 season, which is scheduled to kick off on 15 January 2025.
The congress approved the encounter between defending champions Edo Queens and Abia Angels as the opening match for the 2024-25 NWFL season, with the tie set for the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
