Transfer: Guinea’s Naby Keita to join Ferencvaros on loan from Werder Bremen

Guinea international Naby Keita has agreed to join Hungarian club Ferencvaros on loan from Werder Bremen, Afrosport reports.

Keita, whose move to the Ferencvaros Stadion becomes official in January 2025, joins the Hungarian champions on an initial one-year deal with an option to buy.

A statement on Ferencvaros’ website read: “58-time Guinean national team midfielder Naby Keita, former champion with Liverpool and Champions League winner, will continue his career in our 35-time Hungarian champion and 24-time Hungarian Cup winner men’s football team.

“The excellent midfielder arrives on loan to Üllői út for one year with an option to buy.”

This ends the bitter saga between the Guinean midfielder and Bremen, as the 29-year-old has not featured for the Bundesliga club since April after he was suspended for refusing to travel for a game against Bayer Leverkusen.

“We are pleased to have found a solution, together with Naby and his agent,” said Clemens Fritz, Werder Bremen managing director for sport.

“For us, it was clear that Naby would not play for Werder again. As such, the loan deal is the right move both for us and for him. We wish Naby all the best in Hungary.”

Keita joined Bremen on a free transfer in June 2023, having spent five seasons at English club Liverpool. He, however, played only five times for Bremen in his first season back in the Bundesliga.

He won seven titles during his time at Liverpool, helping the Anfield outfit to triumph in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Ferencvaros are currently second in the Hungarian top division with 31 points, one point behind leaders Puskas Akademia, who have played one game more.

They are in action in the Europa League, where they will travel to take on PAOK on Thursday, 14 December.
