A 30-year-old Arsenal fan identified as John Ssenyonga was reportedly shot dead by a security guard in the Kalungu district of Central Uganda on Wednesday.
The incident took place at Afric Restaurant in the Uganda Cares building, Lukaya Town Council.
Ssenyonga was celebrating Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates when the altercation took place.
The security personnel, identified as Richard Okecho, had ordered the rowdy fans to maintain decorum and orderliness.
He eventually opened fire, which claimed the life of Ssenyonga and left another fan injured.
Southern Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, who confirmed the incident, said Okecho fled the scene, but the police have launched an investigation and urged anyone with information to assist the police.
“We condemn the incident and we ask anyone with information that can help the police to bring the suspect to book to speak up,” he said.
The police have also reminded the people in the region and beyond of the need to control their emotions during such events in order to prevent similar occurrences.
