Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie headlines the final five nominees for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award released by the Confederation of African Football on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.
The 2024 CAF Awards, which cuts across the period from January to October this year, is scheduled to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Monday, 16 December.
Nadozie, however, will battle for the award against four other outstanding African football stars, including Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco), Barbra Banda (Zambia), and Malawi’s eye-catching sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga.
The winner of this year’s award will dethrone Nnadozie’s compatriot, Asisat Oshoala, who has claimed the honours a record six times.
Nadozie also made the final shortlist for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award, having starred for both Nigeria and her club, Paris FC.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper is up against the likes of Fideline Ngoy (DR Congo), Habiba Sabry (Egypt), Khadija Er-Rmichi (Morocco), and Andile Dlamini (South Africa).
Also up for grabs is the Women’s Young Player of the Year award, with Nigeria and River Angels’ Chiamaka Okwuchukwu among the final five nominees. The youngster will fight for the honours against Habiba Sabry (Egypt), Doha El Madani (Morocco), Lina Mokhtar Jamai (Morocco), and Nthabiseng Majiya (South Africa).
The Women’s Interclub Player of the Year nominees are TP Mazembe duo Merveille Nanguji and Lacho Flora Marta, as well as the trio of Doha El Madani, Khadija Er-Rmichi, and Sanaâ Mssoudy, all of AS FAR.
The CAF Women’s Coach of the Year category also has five tacticians vying for the honours, including Nigeria U-20 boss Chris Danjuma, who is up against the formidable quartet of Lamia Boumehdi (TP Mazembe), Ahmed Ramadan (FC Masar), Mohamed Amine Alioua (AS FAR), and Thinasonke Mbuli (University of the Western Cape).
The nominees for CAF Women’s National Team of the Year are Nigeria’ Super Falcons, and the nine-time African champions will contend with Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, and the Cameroon Under-20 side, while the Club of the Year category will see Edo Queens battle reigning CAF Women’s Champions League winners TP Mazembe (DR Congo), AS FAR (Morocco), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), and FC Masar (Egypt).
The winners of each category will be determined through votes from the CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, head coaches and captains of member associations, as well as clubs participating in the group stages of Interclub competitions.
