Nigeria’s Chimezie Metu out for multiple weeks with knee injury

Chimezie Metu in action for FC Barcelona in the Spanish ACB League

Nigerian basketball star Chimezie Metu is set to spend sometime on the sidelines having sustained a knee injury while on duty for Barcelona, Afrosport reports.

The 27-year-old forward has suffered a Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee and is set to miss about 6-8 weeks, the Spanish club announced on Monday.

Metu picked up the injury during Barcelona’s 102-99 win over Valencia Basket in the Spanish Liga ACB on Sunday. The Nigeria international sustained the injury in the second minute of the second quarter after Valencia’s Nate Reuvers fell on his knee while the two players were jostling for an offensive rebound.

Metu’s injury means the former Phoenix Suns man is likely to miss the final 13 games of 2024, with Barcelona revealing that conservative treatment will follow suit.

The D’Tigers forward is averaging 11.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 11.8 efficiency rating (EFF) per game in the Spanish Liga ACB, as well as 7.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 7.2 performance index rating (PIR) per game in 10 EuroLeague appearances.
