Xabi Alonso set to leave Leverkusen at the end of the season

UCL: Xabi Alonso optimistic of Leverkusen progress after heavy defeat to Liverpool

Xabi Alonso is set to leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the current season despite having a contract that runs until 2026, Afrosport reports.

The 42-year-old took over the reins at BayArena in October 2022, before extending his contract for a further four years.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder led the Die Werkself to their first Bundesliga title ever, going unbeaten in all 34 games, alongside the DFB Cup and Supercup in the 2023-24 season.

The Bundesliga title holders have however taken just 17 points from their opening 10 Bundesliga games this term, and are nine points behind Bayern, with just one win in their last six.

According to Eurosport Espana, Xabi Alonso could be heading for Real Madrid along with Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo and trainer Tolosarra.

Los Blancos’ results this season have put Carlo Ancelotti under pressure as they lag behind fierce rivals Barcelona in La Liga and have lost twice in the UEFA Champions League.

Alonso could however be on the move to Bayern Munich should things implode under current boss Vincent Kompany.
