An emotional Jannik Sinner was celebrated as he claimed the coveted ATP Year-End No. 1 trophy in front of the home crowd at the Inalpi Arena in Turin on Monday night, Afrosport reports.
Sinner on June 10th became the first Italian man or woman to reach world number one in the singles category since computerised rankings were introduced in 1973.
The 23-year-old, who has had a phenomenal year winning the Australian Open and US Open as well as ATP Masters 1000 titles in Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai, stated that he never believedj he would lift the trophy in his home country.
“Yea, I just heard that my mom was crying, which is something very cute. Only they [his family] know from my early stages, when I was around 13, how many sacrifices we made as a family also, he said.
“We would never have thought that we would have this [the trophy] at home at some point. It was really only a dream and then slowly you try to improve as a player and as a person and now I’m standing here with one of the… maybe the most special trophy I have.”
