UCL Roundup: Real Madrid, Man City beaten as Liverpool thrash Leverkusen to remain top

Spanish giants Real Madrid have recorded back-to-back home defeats as well as their second loss in the new UEFA Champions League group format as they were beaten 3-1 by AC Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The 15-time European champions fell behind to a goal from German defender Malick Thiaw in the 12th minute, but 11 minutes later, Vinicius Junior equalised for Los Blancos from the penalty spot.

However, goals in both half from Alvaro Morata and Tijjani Reijnders secured a deserved victory for Milan as the Italian club made it two wins in as many games in the tournament.

Elsewhere, newly-appointed Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim’s Sporting produced a strong second-half performance to secure a 4-1 comeback win over Premier League champions Manchester City.

Amorim, who coached his last game at the Estadio de Alvalade, led Sporting to a famous win thanks to a hat-trick from red-hot Swede Viktor Gyokeres and another from Uruguayan midfielder Maximiliano Araujo as they cancelled out Phil Foden’s fourth minute opener for City.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso did not enjoy the best of returns to Liverpool, where he won the UEFA Champions League as a player in 2005, as his Bayer Leverkusen side were thrashed 4-0 at Anfield.

Luis Diaz scored a hat-trick and Cody Gakpo also found the back of the net to help the Reds maintain their perfect record in the competition and retain their spot at the top of the standings.

In Tuesday’s other results, Borussia Dortmund left it late to beat Sturm Graz 1-0, with Dutch forward Donyell Malen netting in the 85th minute at the Signal iduna park.

Celtic sealed a vital 3-1 comeback win against RB Leipzig, while Juventus earned a 1-1 draw away at Lille with a Dusan Vlahovic penalty cancelling out Jonathan David’s opener.

Meanwhile, United States international Malik Tillman scored and assisted as PSV Eindhoven thrashed 10-man Girona 4-0, Dinamo Zagreb also thrashed Slovan Bratislava 4-1, and Monaco won 1-0 away at Bologna.
