Tebogo, Chepngetich & Tola in final shortlist for 2024 World Athletics Awards

Three Africans are in the race for the 2024 World Athletics Awards scheduled to be held in Monaco, France on December 1, Afrosport reports.

Olympic 200m champion, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, is in contention for the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year, and has been shortlisted in the category alongside Olympic 500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s long distance runner and world marathon record holder Ruth Chepngetich has been shortlisted alongside Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands for the women’s out of stadium athlete of the year.

Olympic marathon champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia has been shortlisted for the men’s out of stadium athlete of the year alongside Olympic 20km race walk champion Brian Pintado of Ecuador.

The Women’s track athlete of the year award is between Saint Lucia’s Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred and America’s Olympic 400m hurdles champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh, Olympic high jump champion from Ukraine and Olympic heptathlon champion Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium are vying for the Women’s field athlete of the year award.

In the Men’s field athlete of the year category, Olympic Pole vault champion Mondo Duplantis from Sweden is in contention with Greece’s Olympic long jump champion Miltiadis Tentoglou.

In a new addition to this year’s awards, a final round of voting – cast by fans of the sport – will take place between 4-10 November to decide who the overall World Athlete of the Year is.
