Ex-Morocco and Marseille midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada dies aged 35

Former Morocco international midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada sadly passed away on Thursday at the age of 35, Afrosport reports.

Although the cause of his death has not been confirmed, but reports coming out of Morocco and France claimed he suffered a ‘sudden heart attack’.

Though born in France, Barrada represented Morocco at international level where he made 28 appearances, including captaining the team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The former midfielder scored four goals and provided six assists for the Atlas Lions, before he called time on his football career in 2021.

The Moroccan Football Federation paid tribute to Berrada on social media, adding that his death is “a great loss”.

“The Royal Moroccan Football Federation extends its sincere condolences to the family of the former Moroccan international, the late Abdelaziz Barrada, and through them to all his family and relatives, as well as the national football family,” it said.

Barrada had spell at Paris Saint-Germain’s B side as well as Marseille and Spanish club Getafe, who he played 66 times for between 2011-2013, and scored four goals.

Getafe also extended their tribute to him as they club wrote: “The Getafe CF family is shocked by the death of Getafe player Abdel Barrada. The footballer played 66 matches and scored 4 goals for Getafe in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Our thoughts and support at this time go to Abdel’s family and friends. RIP.”

Meanwhile, with Marseille, he played 33 times and scored twice for during his two seasons at the Ligue 1 club between 2014-2016.

Marseille posted on social media: “Rest in peace, Abdelaziz. Olympique de Marseille is saddened to learn of the passing of its former player and Moroccan international, Abdelaziz Barrada.

“Having arrived in the summer of 2014, the attacking midfielder wore OM’s colors for two seasons. Olympique de Marseille extends its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Barrada also played for Al-Nasr in the United Arab Emirates, Turkish side Antalyaspor and finally Lusitanos Saint-Maur in France, where he was until his retirement three years ago.
