Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons out for ‘several weeks’ with ligament injury

RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons will be unavailable for ‘several weeks’ after sustaining an ankle injury during their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Afrosport reports.

Unable to stand on his own, the 21-year-old was subbed off in the 78th minute of the game with the assistance of Leipzig’s medical staff, and was replaced by Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen

The German club, however, revealed on Thursday that the Netherlands international has suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle.

A statement on their social media read: “Xavi Simona suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle in yesterday’s Champions League match against Liverpool and will therefore be sidelined for several weeks. A decision on how to treat the injury is yet to be made.”

Simons, who is on loan at Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain, is having a surprisingly slow start to the season, having scored just three goals and provided two assists in 11 appearances in all competitions this campaign.

Leipzig are currently 31st in the Champions League standings, having failed to pick up a point owing to defeats in their three games so far.

However, the Red Bull club have a contrasting record in the Bundesliga, where they are unbeaten in seven games and are second in the league standings, tied on points (17) with leaders Bayern Munich, who have a superior goal difference.
