Ethiopia has officially declared its intention to host the 2029 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Afrosport reports.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed while hosting delegates attending the General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
Abiy emphasised Ethiopia’s preparedness to host the continental event, citing the infrastructure and organisational experience of the country which hosted AFCON three times in 1962, 1968 and 1976.
“Ethiopia is prepared to welcome Africa’s biggest football event, and we are confident in our ability to successfully organize and host the 2029 AFCON,” he said.

Ethiopia had solid AFCON form during the formative years of the tournament, finishing as runners-up in the maiden edition in 1957 before wining it on home soil in 1962. They also finished fourth in 1963 and 1968.
