U17WWC: Flamingos defeat Dominican Republic to finish group stage with 100% record

The Flamingos of Nigeria finished their Group A campaign at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 100% record  after bagging a 1-0 win over hosts Dominican Republic on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The West African giants dominated the majority of the game with the first shot on goal coming in as early as the first minute but Dominican Republic’s goalkeeper Jaylene Rondon was not going to be beaten.

The best chance for the host nation came in the 35th minute after a defensive error by the Nigerian defense but Alexa Castro, who was clear on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat could not convert her chance.

The Flamingos kept knocking and the goal eventually came in the 89th minute after a left footed screamer from Shakirat Moshood was finally able to beat Rondon.

Moshood’s goal also increases her chances of winning the competition’s golden boot as she leads the way with four goals.

The Flamingos finished top of Group A ahead of Ecuador who defeated New Zealand 4-0.

Bankole Olowookere’s ladies will get to face the United States, who finished second in Group B behind Spain, in Saturday’s quarter-final.
