The final round of games in matchday 4 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers took place on Tuesday, with Senegal, DR Congo, and Angola joining hosts Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Algeria in securing a spot at next year’s finals.
At the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Sadio Mane’s 96th minute strike earned Senegal a 1-0 victory over Malawi.
The win took the Teranga Lions to 10 points, moving them level with Burkina Faso at the top of Group L with two matches left in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
The result of the match means both Senegal and Burkina Faso cannot be overtaken by their group opponents, while Malawi sits bottom with no points after four matches.
In Group H, DR Congo continued their perfect run with a 2-0 win over Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium to seal their place at the AFCON tournament in Morocco.
A brace from Meschack Elia in the 87th and 93rd minutes sealed all three points for the Leopards, who sit top of the group with 12 points, having won all four of their matches.
Still in Group H, Serhou Guirassy became the current top scorer of the qualifiers with a brace in Guinea’s 3-0 win over Ethiopia at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Borussia Dortmund forward netted in the 16th and 23rd minutes, while Abdoulaye Toure also got on the scoresheet in the 19th minute.
Guinea leapfrogged Tanzania into second place with six points, with the latter on four points.
In Group K, Uganda edged South Sudan in a 2-1 home win at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
Denis Omedi gave the Cranes an early lead in the 15th minute, only for South Sudan to equalise six minutes later with a stunning strike from Yohanna Juma. Uganda, however, restored their lead in the 66th minute courtesy of an own goal from Alfred Leku .
The Cranes now top the group with 10 points, while South Sudan remains bottom with no points on board from four games. Elsewhere, Congo recorded a 1-1 draw against South Africa.
Meanwhile, Uganda will qualify for the finals should they draw or beat South Africa on November 11 in Namboole.
Im Group G, Zambia secured a crucial 1-0 win over Chad, with Kennedy Musonda scoring the game’s only goal in the 70th minute.
At the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia, Sierra Leone stunned Ivory Coast 1-0 courtesy of a late strike from Amadou Bakayoko in the 85th minute.
In Group B, Gabon moved up to second after a 2-0 win over Lesotho. Gabonese winger Shavy Babicka opened the scoring in the 55th minute before Rody Effaghe sealed the victory in the 84th minute with a close-range finish.
While in Oujda, Morocco made it four wins from as many games in Group B, as a brace from Eliesse Ben Seghir and one apiece from Youssef En Nesyri and Abde Ezzalzouli gave the Atlas Lions a 4-0 win over Central African Republic.
In Group F, the woes of Ghana’s Black Stars continued after a 2-0 defeat to Sudan at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benina.
Ahmed Al-Tash took advantage of a mix-up between Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and his defenders to tap the ball into an empty net, giving Sudan the lead in the 62nd minute,
Three minutes later, Sudan struck again through Mohamed Abdelrahman to put the game beyond reach of the Black Stars.
Meanwhile, Angola made it four straight wins to comfortably lead the group, as a strike from Zini in the opening minute ensured their place in Morocco next year.
Group I served up its own drama as Guinea-Bissau held Mali to a goalless draw to keep Mozambique atop the standings.
Yassibe Meriah’s strike for Tunisia cancelled out Comoros’ opener from Faiz Selemani as both teams settled for a 1-1 draw in Group A.
The trouble between Nigeria and Libya in Group D did not stop Rwanda and Benin from entertaining the audience at the Amahoro National Stadium as goals from Innocent Nshuti and Djihad Bizimana handed the hosts a 2-1 comeback win over Benin.
