Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will step down from his role as a global ambassador of the club at the end of the season, Afrosport reports.
The decision is part of the club’s plans to reduce cost, as part-owners INEOS have ended its multi-million pound contract with Ferguson, who is reportedly set to step down from his ambassadorial duties at the end of the season following an amicable conversation with Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week.
Ferguson, the most successful British manager in football history, signed an agreement with United in 2013 to be a club ambassador, receiving 2.16 million pounds a year.
The 82-year-old led United to 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, five FA Cups, four League Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2008.
It is left to see if the new stance from INEOS on cutting cost will affect other club ambassadors like former United stars Andy Cole, Park Ji-sung, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson.
The Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League standings and will host Brentford next on Saturday, October 19, after the international break with under-fire manager Erik ten Hag looking to get lead the team out of troubled waters.
