The Super Eagles of Nigeria have returned to the country after their ordeal in Libya, Afrosport reports.

The three-time African champions were held hostage for more than 15 hours on their way to honour a matchday four encounter in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), their flight was scheduled to land in Benghazi, but Libyan authorities changed the direction of the flight to Al-Abraq International Airport around 8pm, even though the airport lacked the control navigators for landing at such hours.

After spending several hours at the airport, the NFF communicated with Confederation of African Football (CAF) that the players were not in any shape to suit up for the game and would prefer to return to Nigeria.

The team flew into the country through the Aminu Kano International airport in Kano State, on Monday evening, after finally been cleared by Libyan Authorities to fly out.

Meanwhile, the African football governing body, CAF, says appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF statutes and regulations.
