2026 World Cup qualifiers: Darwin Nunez temporarily cleared to join Uruguay after ban suspension

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez has linked up with the Uruguay national team for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador, Afrosport reports.

This comes after his five-match ban, imposed following a brawl involving Uruguay players and Colombian fans during the Copa America semi-final, was temporarily lifted.

Nunez had already served two games of the suspension, but the case has now been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has suspended the ban pending review. The remaining three games could be either quashed or reinstated based on the final decision.

Liverpool had been exploring alternative options to help Nunez maintain form during the international break, given his inconsistent playing time this season. Despite showing promise for Uruguay during Copa America with a couple of goals, the striker has struggled for confidence at club level, only netting once in the Premier League this season.

While Nunez joins his national side, fellow Uruguayans Rodrigo Bentancur and Jose Maria Gimenez will miss the opening game due to ongoing suspensions from the same Copa America incident.
