Diamond League: Prize money increases to highest-ever ahead of new season

The athletics circuit of the Diamond League on Wednesday announced an historic increase in the prize money that will be given out in the competition ahead of the 2025 season.

The Wanda Diamond League revealed that its general assembly has decided to increase the prize money to the highest it’s ever been as the competition approaches its 16th season. The new figure will award the athletes a staggering $9.24 million.

As announced by the organisers, each series will offer up to $500,000, with this fee to be paid out at the 14 different events on the 2025 Wanda Diamond League circuit which begins in April. Furthermore, a total of $2.24 million will be paid out at the 2025 Wanda Diamond League final.

Meanwhile, the prizes will for each event will move up from the previous $25,000 and will now range from $30,000 to $50,000 across the first 14 events. For the final, it will move up from $60,000 to $100,000 with all athletes – male and female – to be awarded the same fee across all events.

Petr Stastny, he Chief Executive of the Diamond League, made this announcement, highlighting the organisation’s dedication to enhancing athletes’ rewards and focusing on the long-term viability of the series.

He said: “The Wanda Diamond League remains committed to rewarding the athletes more, whilst at the same time ensuring the long-term sustainability of the series.

“We provide the world’s best athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest possible level.

“Having competitors from around 100 countries every year allows for TV audiences in 150 countries and territories, making our series a truly universal and global league.”

The 2024 Diamond League came to an end last weekend at the Allianz Memorial Van Damme in Brussels, and next year’s circuit will take place in 13 different countries.
