Serie A: Roma part ways with head coach Daniele De Rossi after winless start

Serie A club Roma have parted ways with head Daniele De Rossi after a string of disappointing results in the 2024-25 season, Afrosport reports.

The Serie A club released a statement on Wednesday regarding the sacking of their former captain and midfielder after he led to a winless run in their opening four games of this campaign.

A club statement read: “AS Roma announces that Daniele De Rossi has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team.

“The club’s decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.

“A heartfelt thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the Giallorossi club, for the work he has done in recent months with passion and dedication.

“Communication regarding the team’s technical guidance will follow.”

De Rossi, who spent over two decades as a Roma player, was made head coach of the Giallorossi in January following the sacking of Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho.

After an impressive 2023-24 campaign, where he led them to a sixth-place finish and qualification for this season’s Europa League, the former Italy international signed a contract extension until 2027 in June.

His time at the Stadio Olimpico started well, with only one defeat in his first 11 matches, as they racked up 26 points from a possible 33. He also led the Italian club to the semifinal of the Europa League, where they were knocked out by losing finalists and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Roma, who are currently 16th in the Serie A standings with just three points, have drawn three of their opening four league games, while losing at home to Empoli on matchday two.

They conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at Genoa last weekend, and will host league leaders Udinese next on Sunday.
