Premier League to begin Man City’s 115 financial charges hearing on Monday

The hearing into Manchester City’s alleged 115 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16, 2024.

In February 2023, City were charged with breaching the Premier League’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations, with 115 individual charges between 2009 and 2018 and were referred to an independent commission following a four-year investigation.

The Premier League champions, who won the league title three times during the period under review, were also charged with failing to comply with the Premier League’s rules on profit and sustainability (PSR) as well as complying with the European football governing body’s financial fair play regulations over a five-year period.

According to reports, City could face points deduction, a limitless fine and a possible exclusion from the English top-flight if found guilty of the above charges.

Responding to the charges in February 2023, City, who are pursuing their fifth consecutive Premier League title has however stated that they were surprised by the allegations and however claimed to have provided and extensive engagement and detailed materials to the Premier League’s to aid their investigation.

“Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with,” they said in a statement at the time.

“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.

“As such, we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”

Due to the volume of charges and the amount of information to be reviewed, the formal hearing of the independent commission could last up to two months.

Therefore, it could be end of the season before a final verdict, including any appeal, could be reached.

Similarly, Everton and Nottingham Forest have both faced points deductions for breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules since City were referred to the independent commission.
