AFCON 2O25 qualifiers: Super Eagles held by Rwanda in Kigali

AFCON 2023: Why South Africa game is Peseiro’s biggest test as Nigeria coach

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by the Wasps of Rwanda on matchday two of their 2O25 Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifier played in Kigali, Afrosport reports.

The three-time AFCON champions, who were coming off the back of a 3-0 victory over the Benin Republic on Saturday in Uyo, came up against a resolute Rwanda side who were unbeaten in their last two outings.

Despite a cagey start, Ademola Lookman seemed to break the deadlock, but his strike was ruled out for offside during the build-up to the goal.

Victor Boniface and Bruno Onyemaechi also came close to scoring the opener for Nigeria but failed to convert their chances despite finding themselves in promising positions, as the game ended in all square going into the halftime break.

At the start of the second half, reigning Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen and Nantes winger Moses Simon came on for  Boniface and Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze, respectively, but the home side remained resolute in defense, keeping the Super Eagles at bay.

Few chances that came the way of the West African giants were either fluffed or saved by Rwandan goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, who was in inspired form.

Despite the introduction of Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, and a late cameo appearance by Taiwo Awoniyi, Austin Eguavoen’s side failed to find a breakthrough as they ultimately settled for a draw.

Despite the result, Nigeria sits on top of Group D with four points, Rwanda is second with two points, while Libya and Benin, who will lock horns later, occupy the third and fourth spot with one point and zero points, respectively.
