Real Madrid boss Ancelotti backs Kylian Mbappe amid La Liga goal drought

Real Madrid summer signing Kylian Mbappe has not gotten off to the best of starts in La Liga, as the French forward is yet to score or provide an assist in his first two league matches for the defending champions.

Mbappe opened his Madrid account on his debut with a goal against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup. However, the 25-year-old has failed to score in his first two games in La Liga—away at Mallorca on opening day and at home against Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Despite the French ace’s current drought in front of goal, Madrid boss Ancelotti has backed the World Cup winner to find his scoring boots as Los Blancos registered their first league win of the new season.

“I don’t think so, I don’t think so,” Ancelotti answered when asked if playing as a centre forward was hurting Mbappe. “He’s a forward, he’s a spectacular forward. He has great speed; he moves very well without the ball. He attacks the spaces. He had three, four chances today. He created those with his movements.

“I think he’s going to score. I don’t think it’s about playing on the left or playing in the middle. He’s going to generate and he’s going to score goals,” the Italian added.

Although Mbappe, who joined Madrid for free this summer, has yet to register a goal, the 36-time Spanish champions have scored four goals in their opening two games, as goals from Federico Valverde, Moroccan midfielder Brahim Diaz, and teenage Brazilian forward Endrick helped them to a 3-0 win over Valladolid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mbappe will have a chance to score his first La Liga goal when Los Blancos visit the Gran Canaria Stadium on Thursday to take on Las Palmas.
