The South Africa Sevens Rugby team progressed to the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics with a 49-5 Group A victory over Japan Sevens on Thursday while Kenya Sevens suffered a heavy 26-0 loss to Samoa in Group B.
The Blitzboks were beaten 10-5 by Ireland on Wednesday but came out guns blazing against the Japanese in the first half with Mogamat Davids, Impi Visser, Shilton van Wyk and Ryan Oosthuizen (brace) all getting tries while Tristan Leyds scored all five conversation goals.
The 2016 Olympic bronze medallists added more in the second half with tries from Rosko Specman and Van Wyk and the conversation goals from Ronald Brown.
Kazuma Ueda scored the only try for Japan.
South Africa Sevens finished third in Group A behind New Zealand and Ireland and will face the All Blacks in the last eight.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Sevens were no match for Samoa. Motu Opetai got the first try in the first half and was followed by second half tries by Paulo Scanlan, Apelu Maliko and Steve Onosai.
The Shujaa finished bottom in Group B and will contest against Uruguay in the 9th–12th playoffs.
