NPFL: Rangers win eighth title with game to spare
  1. Rangers International have won the 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.

The Flying Antelopes sealed their eighth Nigerian league title after beating Bendel Insurance 2-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in their penultimate game of the season on Sunday.

Goals from Agu Kenechukwu and Chidiebere Nwobodo in the 33rd and 65th minutes respectively sealed the Flying Antelopes’ win, as Remo Stars’ 2-1 loss to Sunshine Stars in Akure, propelled Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side to the triumph with a game to the end of the season.

Rangers previously won the NPFL title in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984 and 2016 before this year’s triumph.

The Enugu-based club will now return to the CAF Champions League next season for the first time in eight years.

Rangers last won the League in 2016 under former Super Eagles assistant coach and ex-Nigerian goalkeeper, Imama Amapakabo.

Sunday’s victory also ended coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s long-wait for a title in his coaching career having previously managed defunct MFM FC and Heartland FC.

Rangers’ last game of the season will take place at the Isa Pantami Stadium when they travel to Gombe United on Sunday, June 23.

Despite losing in Akure, Remo Stars maintained second spot after third-placed Enyimba were also beaten 2-1 by Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
